New DarkSky Approved pickleball complex shines sustainably in Champaign, Illinois

DarkSky International is proud to announce a newly certified DarkSky Approved Outdoor Sports Lighting project in Champaign, Illinois. 

The Centennial Park Pickleball Complex, operated by the Champaign Park District, completed a sustainable lighting upgrade in February 2025 and is now the second outdoor sports court in Illinois to receive this important certification. The lighting, designed by Musco Lighting, meets DarkSky’s rigorous standards to minimize light pollution and protect the nighttime environment.

Located at 2203 W. John Street, the Centennial Park Pickleball Complex, known locally as the John Street Courts, is a beloved destination for pickleball players in the Champaign-Urbana area. The facility is home to daily pick-up games, the annual Champaign Park District Pickleball Open each May, and summer pickleball leagues.

With play often extending after sunset, the need for lighting grew, but the Champaign Park District was committed to implementing a solution that preserved the surrounding environment. The new lighting system keeps illumination focused only within the court boundaries, protecting neighboring areas from glare and skyglow.

“The courts are often at full capacity with four players per court and others waiting their turn,” said Sarah Sandquist, Executive Director of the Champaign Park District. “Within an hour of the new lights being installed, players shared the news on social media and were playing until after 8:00 p.m. We’re thrilled to provide this amenity in a way that aligns with our sustainability goals.”

This lighting project is the first phase of a multi-year plan to improve and expand the complex. Future updates include adding eight more courts, restrooms, and additional parking to meet the growing demand for pickleball. The project demonstrates how communities can support recreation while protecting the natural night.
